Split:

Diocletian’s Palace:

Built at the end of the 3rd century AD, Diocletian’s Palace is an ancient marvel that forms about half of Split’s old town. Although called a “palace,” it’s more like a massive fortress surrounded by walls and towers. Originally intended as the retirement residence of Roman Emperor Diocletian, the palace now houses both the old town and a military garrison. The complex, part of UNESCO’s World Heritage List, boasts well-preserved sights from the Roman era. Entrance to the palace is free, but there’s a fee to explore the buildings within.


Best time to visit: It’s best to visit during the early morning to explore the cellars, peristyle, and the Cathedral of Saint Domnius without the crowds. May, June, and September are ideal months for a visit as Spring or autumn provide a comfortable climate and fewer tourists.

Transportation: The palace is centrally located in Split, making it easily accessible by foot.

Riva Promenade:

This waterfront promenade is perfect for an evening stroll, lined with cafes and offering beautiful views of the harbor. The Riva Promenade stretches along the seafront in the heart of Split. It’s a short walk from Diocletian’s Palace and the Natural History Museum. This lively walkway leads to the ferry terminal, connecting Split to nearby islands along the coast.

Transportation: Simply stroll along the waterfront to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

Marjan Hill Park:

Known as the ‘lungs of the city,’ Marjan offers a natural escape with trails leading to old churches and hermitage caves. Marjan Hill, covered in a dense Mediterranean pine forest, offers panoramic views of the city and the sea. It’s a favorite spot for walking, running, jogging, and biking. The highest peak, Telegrin, stands 178 meters high and provides stunning vistas of Split’s harbor and old city. Marjan is a natural oasis, perfect for escaping the bustling city during peak tourist season.

Best time to visit: Morning hikes are recommended to avoid the midday heat, especially from April to June or September to October.

Cathedral of Saint Domnius:

Originally, built as a mausoleum for Emperor Diocletian, the cathedral features a well-preserved bell tower blends architectural styles from Romanesque to Baroque. It is also known as Sveti Dujam, this Catholic cathedral is located within Diocletian’s Palace. Explore the treasury with its rich collection of silver and gold liturgical vessels.

Best time to visit: The late afternoon is a quieter time for a visit, with May to June and September to October being the best months.

Transportation: The cathedral is centrally situated in Split, easily reachable on foot.

Klis Fortress:

Klis Fortress is a medieval stronghold perched above the village of Klis, near Split in Croatia. Its rich history spans over two millennia, making it a prominent historical monument. Klis Fortress gained fame as a filming location for the popular TV show Game of Thrones. Its rugged walls and stunning views made it a perfect backdrop for epic scenes.

Transportation: Located 12 kilometers outside of Split. If you have a rental car, it’s a short drive. Alternatively, Bus 22 provides public transport to the fortress.


Best time to visit: Visit in the morning or just before sunset for the best experience. April to June and September are the recommended months.

Stari Grad Plain:

The Stari Grad Plain, near Stari Grad town, is an UNESCO World Heritage site, the agricultural landscape wa set up by ancient Greek colonists in the 4th century BC. It remains in use and is the largest agricultural area on any Adriatic Island. The original layout has been preserved for 24 centuries.

Best time to visit: This ancient agricultural landscape has been preserved since Greek times and is best seen in the late afternoon. The months from May to September offer the best weather for a visit.

Transportation: To reach Stari Grad Plain, consider renting a scooter or bicycle from Hvar Town. You can also take a taxi to the site.

Pakleni Islands:

The Pakleni Islands boast some of Croatia’s most stunning beaches. Crystal-clear waters and picturesque coves await exploration. Snorkeling here is an unforgettable experience. Several islands offer hip beach clubs where you can unwind and enjoy life.

Best time to visit: Take a morning boat trip as this allows you to enjoy the islands before they get busy. June to September is the peak season.

Transportation: These rocky islets are a mere 10-20 minutes away from Hvar town by boat.

Fortica Fortress:

The Fortica Fortress, also known as the Spanish Fortress, looms high above Hvar Town. Built in 1579, it occupies the site of an ancient Illyrian settlement dating back to 500 BC. The views from the fortress over Hvar and the Pakleni Islands are magnificent. Inside, you’ll find ancient amphorae and a terrace café. The fortress is accessible by foot (a gentle slope) or by taxi to the top. It’s a hidden gem.

Best time to visit: Morning visits are ideal for photography. Visit during May, June, and September for the best experience.

Transportation: Take a taxi or rent a scooter or bicycle from Hvar Town to reach the fortress.

Dubovica Beach:

The beach at Dubovica is another hidden gem. A picturesque pebble beach perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

Best time to visit: It’s less crowded in the morning. While July and August are peak season, June and September offer a quieter experience.

Transportation:To get there, follow the road (D116) and then descend by foot along a zig-zagging pathway. Renting a scooter or bicycle is a budget-friendly option or take a taxi directly to the beach.

Dubrovnik:

Old Town Walls:

The Walls of Dubrovnik are a series of defensive stone walls surrounding the city of Dubrovnik in southern Croatia. These ancient walls offer breathtaking views of the city, the Adriatic Sea, and the nearby Lokrum Island. You can walk along the walls and immerse yourself in centuries of history. The entrance is located near the eastern entrance to Old Town Dubrovnik.


Best time to visit: Morning or late afternoon are the best times to avoid the heat and crowds. May, June, and September are the best months.

Dubrovnik Cable Car:

The cable car takes you up to the peak of Mount Srđ for a panoramic views. The top of Srđ mountain is an ideal spot for photos, especially during sunset. You’ll find a restaurant, café, and souvenir shop at the upper cable car station and Fort Imperial. Don’t miss Museum Dubrovnik in Homeland War, which displays original documents, art, and photographs related to the war. The fort on the top, called Fort Imperial, was built by Napoleon and completed on his birthday.

Best time to visit: The April to June and September to October period offers clear skies.

Transportation: The cable car departs from a lower station just outside the eastern entrance to Old Town Dubrovnik. You can also reach it by local bus or taxi from the cruise ship port.

Lokrum Island:

Is a lush, green paradise with botanical gardens, peacocks, and ancient ruins just a short boat ride from Dubrovnik. Explore the island’s walking trails, visit the Dead Sea (a saltwater lake), and enjoy the tranquility away from the bustling city.

Best time to visit: The first boat in the morning ensures a tranquil visit. May to September is the ideal time frame.

Transportation: Take a boat from Dubrovnik.

Stradun:

The main street of Dubrovnik, lined with historic buildings and bustling cafes. This is a limestone-paved pedestrian only street.

Best time to visit: Early morning or evening are the best times for a leisurely walk. May, June, and September are the most pleasant months.

Banje Beach:

Dubrovnik’s most famous beach is great for relaxation and water sports. The popular pebble beach is located just outside the city walls. Relax on the beach, swim, and enjoy the vibrant beachside bars while admiring the crystal clear Adriatic waters.


Best time to visit: Morning or late afternoon visits help avoid the midday sun. May and September are less crowded compared to July and August.
